Popular River Runs From Boquete, Panama<\/h2>\n

You hear a lot about the amazing white water rafting excursions in Costa Rica<\/a>, but when it comes to adrenaline-pumping rafting adventures, travelers may be surprised to learn that many white water rafting enthusiasts prefer white water rafting Panama Rivers<\/a> to those of its northerly neighbor. Panama absolutely tops the list for Central America\u2019s (and some would say the world\u2019s) very best whitewater rafting rivers.  The Chiriqui Province alone boasts 7 different rivers which contain Class II, III, IV, and V whitewater rapids!  We\u2019ll take a look at the most popular commercially run rivers, the different sections and what they have to offer for our whitewater rafting beginners, experts and everyone in between.<\/p>\n

White Water Rafting Chiriqui Viejo River:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just below the border of Costa Rica are the Chiriqui Highlands, which in our humble opinion, offer some of the most breath-taking marvels of the world.  On the northwest side of the Baru Volcano you\u2019ll find Cerro Picacho, Panama\u2019s highest elevation at 3,475 meters above sea level.  From here flows the Chiriqui Viejo River, Panama\u2019s most renowned white water rafting destination.  What makes the Chiriqui Viejo River so special?  Besides its outstanding views and abundant wildlife, this Panama River offers whitewater rapids for all skill levels.  From Class II to class V and beyond, the Chiriqui Viejo River has whitewater rapids for every paddler. <\/p>\n

There are several sections of Chiriqui Viejo River that can be run commercially. In areas that have not been affected by the damming, you can find class 4 rapids pretty much all year round.  The upper sections are for the more experienced rafters while the lower runs provide opportunities for the whole family to experience white water rafting.  Chiriqui Viejo put Panama on the map as one of the top white water rafting destinations in the Americas.<\/p>\n

White Water Rafting Chiriqui River:<\/h4>\n

Due to its convenient location, the Chiriqui River was once the favorite destination for white water rafting from Boquete. Unfortunately, the Chiriqui River has now been affected by several mini hydroelectric projects causing water levels to fluctuate from nearly dry to raging depending on the dry or rainy season and the damming.  This has limited the amount of commercial runs to those on the lower section after the La Fortuna Dam.  You can find fun and challenging class 4 and class 5 rapids during the rainy season, but the dry season brings the rivers runs to a halt.  Be sure to plan your Panama vacation between June and November and check ahead of time if you\u2019d like to whitewater raft on the Chiriqui River.<\/p>\n

White Water Rafting Caldera River<\/h4>\n

Caldera River is the closest white water rapids to Boquete and can be done in a short half day trip. White water rafting Caldera River provides rapid after rapid for those experienced whitewater rapids who like a challenge!  A few steep inclines that require technical whitewater rafting skills make the Caldera River a dream for those with whitewater rafting knowledge.  There is one portage (where rafters must carry their raft) around a waterfall, which makes for a great place to stop and enjoy a snack.  The Caldera River merges with the Aguas Blancas River at the end of the whitewater rafting run, and you\u2019ll feel a change in the rapids as the volume increases.  Paddle hard, and enjoy the Caldera River during rainy season!  Although this is only a short 1 hour decent, we are sure that you will feel like you spent a full day paddling by the time we arrive to the bottom. <\/p>\n

White Water Rafting Rio Fonseca<\/h4>\n

Located about 2 hours from Boquete, Rio Fonseca is arguably the most beautiful river in the Chriqui Highlands. Thankfully, this river has been spared from the hydro-electric and any damming\u2026.so far.  White water rafting Rio Fonseca also offers a bit of a cultural exchange as the drop in point starts in Soloy, an indigenous territory belonging to Panama\u2019s Ngobe-Bugle indigenous people.   They love to mingle with the rafting groups that visit their territory, so it is a great way to learn a bit more about Panama\u2019s indigenous groups up close.<\/p>\n

Perfect for beginners, the Fonseca River starts out slow allowing you to get a feel for the river and your paddle team.  As the run makes it way down, streams and waterfalls will feed into the river and the class 3 white water rapids begin.  The Fonseca River run is generally wide with no canyon walls to create any additional water hazards and flows steadily.  There are also crystal clear swimming holes perfect for taking a break from paddling to enjoy.<\/p>\n

White Water Rafting Gariche River:<\/h4>\n

White water rafting Gariche River is a great experience for the whole family and treat for nature lovers too!  Aside from fun class 2 and class 3 rapids, the banks of the Gariche are filled with wildlife galore! As you maneuver through the easy to navigate white water rapids, keep your eyes peeled for monkeys swinging above, iguanas sunbathing and tropical birds singing in the dense tropical vegetation.  Add to that pristine waterfalls and crystal clear swimming pools and you understand why this is one of the most popular white water rafting trips in Panama.<\/p>\n

Located only 45 minutes from Boquete, white water rafting Majagua River\u2019s class 2 and 3 rapids is perfect for first-time rafters and adventurous young families. In fact, Majagua River is safe for children as young as 6 years old. Exciting whitewater rapids are interspersed with tranquil swimming holes and gorgeous scenery providing the perfect balance.<\/p>\n

Our advice:<\/strong> If you are serious about wanting to explore the world of white water rafting in Panama, come visit us during rainy season.  The rainy season in Boquete runs from May through December, but September through November provide the most white water rafting options.<\/p>\n
