This annual 3-day celebration of life and death is like nothing you\u2019ve ever experienced and has made an impression on so many people that it has become synonymous with Mexican culture and lore. On this day families gather at the gravesites of deceased loved ones, decorating them brightly with beautiful marigolds and other flowers, sugar skulls, photos, and mementos of the lost one\u2019s life. It commences on October 31st and ends on November 2nd, and though it may sound morbid it is anything but! November 1st is set aside for remembering the young children who have passed, and is referred to as D\u00eda de Los Inocentes, or \u201cday of the innocents\u201d. November 2nd is when the spirits of the adults join the party, the official \u201cDia de Los Muertos\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Families often create altars in their homes in addition to lavishly decorating the gravesites of the dearly departed with marigolds, sugar skulls, old portraits, favorite foods, drinks, and even a tall glass of water, should the spirit need hydrating after their long journey from the other side. They don elaborate Katrina costumes, paint their faces like sugar skulls, and put on lavish parties complete with stories, dancing, music, and relics from lost lives.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">And just as Latin America celebrates Dia de Los Muertos a little differently in each region, so too does each region of Mexico have its own way of celebrating. This wonderful town in central Mexico is host to Festival de las Calaveras (Festival of the Skulls), every year from October 28th to November 2nd. During this special time of the year, they even have live music! Families gather throughout the day on November 1st to clean and decorate their loved one\u2019s space and await the arrival of their spirit at midnight. It\u2019s an experience you\u2019ll be talking about for years.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Janitzio and Patzcuaro, Michoacan<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Janitzio is a small island in Patzcuaro Lake, located in the town of Patzcuaro. The Purepecha indigenous people call this island home and have elaborate Day of the Dead rituals which include folk dancing and chanting through the night, gathered around their loved one&#8217;s final resting places. Here they prepare a specially seasoned chicken tamale which they wrap in banana leaves and cook underground. A carnival-like atmosphere permeates the town with booths set up everywhere and a procession complete with a cardboard coffin that leads to the town cemetery where a candlelight vigil takes place.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Oaxaca, Oaxaca<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A visit to Oaxaca is a treat no matter what time of year you go, but during the Dia de Los Muertos festivities, you\u2019ll find vigils in all the cemeteries, elaborate altars set up throughout town, lively parades, and even sand tapestry competitions in which participants create \u201c3D paintings\u201d out of sand.
