{"id":1876,"date":"2015-03-19T08:00:03","date_gmt":"2015-03-19T14:00:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.therealdealtours.com\/blog\/?p=1876"},"modified":"2022-10-20T17:04:46","modified_gmt":"2022-10-20T22:04:46","slug":"costa-rica-slang","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.therealdealtours.com\/blog\/blog\/costa-rica-slang\/","title":{"rendered":"Costa Rica Slang : Communicating in Costa Rica"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>Costa Rican Spanish<\/h1>\n<h2>Commonly Used Costa Rican Expressions and Slang<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even if you are fluent in Spanish, you may get a little lost in conversation when speaking Spanish in Costa Rica. &nbsp;Every country has its own expressions; words and phrases particular to the country and its people. &nbsp;When it comes to Costa Rica, Ticos use lots of slang expressions!! &nbsp;So better to know the meaning of some of the most widely used slang expressions in Costa Rica because we are sure you\u2019ll come across a few of them during your travels in Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a title=\"Costa Rica Slang : Communicating in Costa Rica\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tico or Tica<\/a>: How people of Costa Rica are warmly called. &nbsp;It\u2019s believed it comes from a Colonial saying \u201ctodos somos hermaniTICOS\u201d, meaning we are all little brothers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Alo<\/strong> or <strong>A lo:<\/strong> No, they are not speaking English and saying hello, but this is how many Ticos will greet you when answering their phones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Tuanis:<\/strong>&nbsp;The Tico way to say \u201cCool!\u201d, whether referring to a thing or something that\u2019s happened. &nbsp;This is especially used in the Caribbean towns of Costa Rica.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a1Jale!:<\/strong> Used in Costa Rica and other Latin American countries, it\u2019s an expression meaning \u201cLet\u2019s go\u201d. &nbsp;It could also be used in a more rude way to tell someone to leave; the most common expression would be \u201c\u00a1Va Jalando!\u201d meaning \u201cGet out of here!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chiva:<\/strong> Slang expression used to describe that something is pretty or pleasant. For instance, \u201cthis is a very nice beach\u201d would be \u201cesta playa es muy chiva!\u201d &nbsp;Chiva or similar variations of this word are used in a few other Latin cultures as well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Al chile:<\/strong>&nbsp;Like the American expression \u201cFor Real!\u201d, used to explain that something is the way it is.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Plata or Harina:<\/strong> A slang expression commonly used throughought Costa Rica, harine means money. &nbsp;Harina, which literally means flour, is used like the expression \u201cdough\u201d in the U.S. &nbsp;Plata is silver.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>\u00a1Que madre!:<\/strong> Costa Rica slang meaning \u201cWhat a shame!\u201d, like in regret.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Jama:<\/strong>&nbsp;A common Costa Rica expression meaning food.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Chante:<\/strong> Costa Rica slang for house or home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Mae or Maje:<\/strong> Maje is widely used and maybe a bit abused in Costa Rica conversations. More or less Mae or Maje is an informal manner to call someone but not disrespectful, like the American expression \u201cdude\u201d or &#8220;man&#8221;. A funny story, it was said that upon visiting Costa Rica, the King of Spain thought the Tico\u2019s were super nice people and mistook the \u201cMaje\u201d as an abbreviation of \u201cyour majesty\u201d. &nbsp;See, if they King of Spain doesn\u2019t get the Tico slang, the rest of us surely are not expected to understand immediately either!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Ydiay, Idiay, or Diay:<\/strong> Just about everyone in Costa Rica uses this slang term and in many different ways as is common with many expressions in the Spanish language in general. &nbsp;One way Diay is used as a polite way to say &#8220;whatever&#8221;.
