Rafting is an adventure sport suitable for the whole family, children as young as 8 years to people 90 years old can enjoy, and no previous experience is necessary. Rafting is a tourist activity designed to be done with the help of a professional guide in the raft with you and a safety team of other rafts or kayaks. Before heading out into the water, your guide will give you in depth instructions on how to use the equipment and emergency safety procedures. Costa Rica takes safety very seriously and the guides must be certified in order to provide commercial rafting service. A good rafting guide will make you feel like an expert before you even leave the shore for your first rapid. Most companies use one guide with a boat of 6 passengers, and there are kayak crews that flank the group and scout out the next rapids to ensure you are on the best and safest route. Be prepared to listen to your guide and work as a team to get the best experience and less chance of going for an unexpected swim.
Costa Rica has 14 rivers that are used for commercial whitewater rafting. The Class of each sections of rapids are ranked from Class I to Class IV+ being the most challenging river runs in Costa Rica. Rapids worldwide are ranked 1-6. There are several factures in making their classifications such as the gradient of the rapids, how many kilometers it drops, along with the obstacles that the rapid has and risks of the rapid.
How do you break down the Rapid Classes?
Class I- Small rapids with little movement usually used for wildlife viewing on Float Tours. Basically very little risk of ever falling out of the boat and the water would be so calm that you could easily find your way to shore.
Class II- Some waves and holes and little difficulty recommended for the more timid first-time rafters. Big clear channels with easy to maneuver waves and very readable rapids so little risk.
Class III- Rapids with medium waves which requires a professional guide to lead, but still great fun for all ages. These rapids would be challenging in a canoe, but on a raft they are fun and moderately easy to maneuver.
Class IV- Rapids that are quite technical, with a high level of difficulty, and it requires a well experienced guide and a safety team. Although this is still a fine option even for a beginner; the recommended minimum age is 12 years old as they need the strength to paddle hard when necessary. This can be a combination of narrow canyons and rapid drops.
Class V- Rapids that are very difficult and technical running through narrow canyons that are recommended only for professionals who are in good physical condition and very knowledgeable about the area and the whitewater rapids, people with physical condition and knowledge of white water and rarely run commercially.

Class VI- Rapids are almost un-navigable, they can only be done by professional kayakers, meaning errors can be extremely critical and should only be attempted by experts.
